What to expect at your first session

Your first appointment takes around 45 minutes. We'll talk through your history and what's been going on, then do a physical assessment to find the actual cause, which isn't always where the pain is. Treatment usually starts the same day, and you'll leave with a clear explanation and a plan, including what you can do yourself between sessions.

Frequently asked questions

How much does physiotherapy cost in Cork?
Your initial assessment (45 minutes) is €75. Follow-up sessions (30 minutes) are €60. Assessment and treatment happen in the same visit, so you won't pay for an assessment-only appointment. Receipts are provided for VHI, Laya and Irish Life Health claims.
Can I claim physiotherapy on my health insurance?
Most Irish health insurers, VHI, Laya and Irish Life Health cover part of the cost of chartered physiotherapy, depending on your plan. Mariam is a Chartered Physiotherapist and CORU registered, which is what insurers require. You pay at the clinic, keep your receipt, and claim back through your insurer. Physiotherapy fees may also qualify for tax relief through Revenue if not otherwise reimbursed.
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist in Ireland?
No. Physiotherapists are primary care practitioners, so you can book directly. If your health insurance covers physiotherapy, check whether they require a referral for claiming, most don't.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the issue, and you'll get an honest estimate at your first assessment. Every plan moves through the same three phases: relief, where we settle the pain and find the limits; rehabilitation, where you rebuild strength and confidence with us guiding the work; and resilience, where sessions spread out and self-management takes over. Wherever you are, you'll know which phase you're in and what comes next. And we'll never book you in for more than you need.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothes you can move in. For lower body issues, shorts are ideal; for shoulders and neck, a vest or loose top.
Does treatment hurt?
Some techniques can be momentarily uncomfortable, but treatment shouldn't be painful and you're in control throughout. Discomfort is never a requirement for progress. Sometimes things feel a bit more sore for a day or so after a first visit, mostly because we test where the limits are. That settles, and we'll tell you what to expect before you leave.
