Best time to seek physiotherapy for a surgery is before hand if you're able. Its been consistently shown that with surgeries like knee replacements, hip replacements, elective ACL repair and more there is an improved prognosis with pre-surgical prep. However, in cases where there is no "prehab" there are multiple ways to help improve your recovery and get you to your goals faster.

Post surgical rehabilitation is important for all kinds of surgeries; orthopedics or otherwise. These are some of the surgeries that physiotherapy can help with*:

  • Total and partial knee replacements
  • ACL, MCL and meniscus repairs
  • Total and partial hip replacements
  • Ankle repair
  • Any type of internal and external fixation of the bones
  • Post laminectomy or other spinal surgeries
  • Post hernia repair
  • Various other surgeries: contact us if you have specific questions about surgeries not mentioned above

* Always discuss physiotherapy as an option with your surgeon for rehabilitation clearance post surgery.

How we treat it

Generally with post surgical rehabilitation, you're telling us what the diagnosis is. If you have any letters from GP or surgeons we generally would like to see that. Its important to know as much information about the procedure as we can since different surgical approaches may change the management.

One of the most important milestones post Surgery is getting the range of motion back and trying to activate your muscle. Thus we will be working closely together to get you to build your tolerance to various exercises and stretches.

Depending on the type of surgery the time lines and the number of physiotherapy sessions will differ. However, most post surgical rehabilitation follows a three step process; Pain Relief, Rehabilitation and Resilience. We will guide you through all the steps to graduate from one phase to the other till you achieve your goals.

How physiotherapy works

What to expect

Like all physiotherapy appointments, we first start with a thorough history and get a good understanding of you goals and what activities you enjoy doing and want to return to. We then discuss various surgical protocols as appropriate. In some instances with surgeries hands on treatment may not be appropriate, especially in earlier stages, however we will ensure you're part of the decision making process for appropriate treatments.
